The Kentucky Derby is full of wild history and quirky traditions! Here are some fun and surprising facts:

1. It’s the longest continuously held sporting event in the U.S.

The first Derby was in 1875, and it’s been held every single year since, even during the World Wars and the pandemic.

2. Mint juleps = the official drink

Each year, around 120,000 mint juleps are served during Derby weekend. That’s a lot of bourbon, ice, and mint.

3. Big hats and bold fashion are basically required

The tradition of wearing extravagant hats started as a way for women to show off wealth and status—and now it’s an iconic part of the event.

4. The race is nicknamed “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”

That’s how long it takes these elite horses to run the 1¼-mile track.

5. The winner gets a blanket of roses

More than 400 red roses are sewn into the famous garland, which is why the Derby is sometimes called “The Run for the Roses.”

6. Secretariat still holds the record

In 1973, Secretariat won the Derby in just 1:59.4—and no horse has beaten that time since.

7. “My Old Kentucky Home” gets sung right before the race

This tradition has been around for decades and brings the crowd to full nostalgic chills.

8. Southern food is part of the experience

Think hot browns, burgoo stew, pimento cheese, and derby pie—your taste buds will thank you.
