Hibbing Community College Building Naming Celebration

Join Hibbing Community College (HCC) on Friday, October 8th, 2021, in celebrating new names for buildings and common spaces.

The renaming process began with HCC seeking nominations from community members, students, faculty, alumni, and staff. Historically, campus buildings have been labelled by letter; however, with HCC having completed a major renovation project, the college recognized an opportunity to assign more meaningful names to its buildings and common spaces. As nominations were received, an HCC committee consisting of HCC faculty, staff, administrations, students, alumni, and community members made the final naming recommendations, which were approved by the chancellor of the Minnesota State system.

New memorable names will now offer clarity for students and visitors while also honoring HCC’s century-long history of providing affordable higher education for the Iron Range.

The Building Naming Celebration will take place on Friday October 8th, 2021, and will honor individuals and groups that have made a lasting impact on the Hibbing Community College. The public is welcome to attend.

Try your hand at water-miscible oil painting. Instructor will help participants to create a Northern Lights painting using an 11×14 stretched canvas and water-miscible oil paint.

No experience necessary-all skill levels welcome.

Minnesota Main Street COVID Relief Grants: DEED Applications Begin September 20th

Minnesota Main Street COVID Relief Grants to Begin Accepting

More than $64 million is available in grants for Minnesota businesses that experienced financial
hardship due to COVID-19.

St. Paul – The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) will begin accepting applications for the Main Street COVID Relief Grants Program on September 20th. This program was approved by the Minnesota State Legislature and signed by Gov. Tim Walz on June 30, 2021.  

A total of $64,200,000 is available in grants for Minnesotan owned and operated businesses that can demonstrate financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Businesses that are majority-owned by military veterans, women, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color individuals; employ 6 people or fewer; and/or did not receive previous assistance from other state relief programs will be prioritized in the selection process. Funding will be distributed in a 50/50 split between the Twin Cities metro area and Greater Minnesota.   

Applicants that qualify and are selected will receive a grant amount between $10,000 and $25,000 based on the number of full-time equivalent (FTEs) employees on staff. To be eligible, businesses must operate in Minnesota and be majority owned by a resident of Minnesota. “We know many small businesses are still feeling the lingering effects of the darkest days of the pandemic, so we’re eager to get this money into their pockets,” said DEED Commissioner Steve Grove. “We know small businesses are big drivers of the job growth we need in our economy and hope businesses across the state apply for these funds.” 

Previous relief programs include the Small Business Emergency Loan program, the Small Business Relief Grant Program, the Movie Theater and Convention Center Relief Grant program, and the County Relief Grant program.

Applications will be reviewed and awards will be disbursed and administered by qualified local and regionally based nonprofit organizations. Grant funds received by individual businesses shall be used for working capital to support payroll expenses, rent, mortgage payments, utility bills, and other similar expenses that occur or have occurred since March 12, 2020, in the regular course of business. 

The application portal will open September 20, 2021 and will accept applications for 10 days after opening. Applications will close on September 29 at 11:59 p.m. Afterward, grant applications will be selected for consideration through a computer-generated, randomized selection process.

·         Eligibility

To qualify, an applicant must:

·         Be private for-profit business or non-profit organization (that earns revenue in ways similar to a business) with primary operations located in the state of Minnesota.

·         Be at least 50% owned by one or more resident(s) of Minnesota.

·         Employee the equivalent of 200 full-time workers or less.

·         Be able to demonstrate financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

·         Minimum total sales or revenue of at least $10,000 for the 2020 or 2019 tax year.

In making awards, there are minimum set asides for various targeted groups and categories of businesses.

·         50% of funds will be available for businesses based in Greater Minnesota.

·         50% of funds will be available for businesses based in the 7-county metro area (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington counties).

·         A minimum amount of funds must be awarded as follows:

o $18 million for businesses with six or fewer full-time workers.

o $10 million for businesses that are majority owned and operated by Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC).

o $2.5 million for businesses that are majority owned and operated by veterans.

o $2.5 million for businesses that are majority owned and operated by women.

Applicants will receive a grant amount based on the number of full-time equivalent (FTEs) employees on staff.

  • $10,000 – 6 FTEs or less.
  • $15,000 – Between 7 and 49 FTEs
  • $20,000 – Between 50 and 99 FTEs
  • $25,000 – Between 100 and 200 FTEs

Minnesota Discovery Center: Crowdfunding Digital Campaign Launch for Redhead Phase 2 Expansion

Starting Friday September 3rd 2021, The MDC will be launching a public crowdfunding campaign at www.GOREDHEAD.com to help fund the planned expansion of The Redhead MTB Park. The goal is to raise $100,000 from the public between September 3rd and October 3rd but will continue accepting donations after that deadline and until the project is fully funded. Funds raised during the campaign will directly support the phase 2 expansion plan, offsetting the total cost of the project. Members of the public  are invited to visit The Redhead crowdfunding campaign website HERE and social media platforms to follow and discover more about the project and support it with a donation.

 

As part of the campaign, the MDC will host a community fundraiser and screening of the documentary “Reclaimed”, a short film sharing a glimpse of the tory of The Redhead MTB Park, at the MDC theater. A date for this screening will be announced soon on the MDC and GoRedhead websites at mndiscoverycenter.com and goredhead.com

“We are thrilled to be officially launching this campaign and inviting the public behind the fences of the mines that built America,” said Jordan Metsa, MDC Fund Development and Marketing Coordinator. “A lot of hard work went into producing this campaign and we hope it helps people get excited about the unearthed potential Redhead has.”

The Phase 2 expansion project is anticipated to cost approximately $1.9 million and would include up to 14 additional miles with some wider trails for adaptive cycling and competitive racing, a mining themed paved pump track, a robust skills course, and enhanced user amenities throughout the trail system i.e. changing stations, water stations, bike pump stations, shade shacks, historical and interpretive signage, and more.

Behind the scenes, The MDC will be foraging new private and public partnerships, seeking community sponsors, and writing grants in a combined effort to raise the funds needed to complete the expansion of Redhead into its full potential as a world-class recreational destination.

“By acquiring phase 2 funding, one thing we can do is incorporate our museum into Redhead, offering a sort of educational experience as well as the recreational one everyone is coming for,” said Donna Johnson, Executive Director of the MDC. “This funding will not only build out the full experience Redhead offers, but it will allow us to share the rich history that is unique to this region.”

The expansion will help attract new visitors to the Iron Range, help the park attract new events, make the park more accessible and accommodating to beginning riders and individuals with disabilities, and promote healthy and vibrant communities. To recognize donors who contribute, the MDC will have a sign manufactured portraying the names of donors. The sign will be placed at the trailhead once the project is complete.
