If you’re interested in film then check out the upcoming MDC Documentary and Editing Workshops! There are two separate courses that will be offered, both of which will take place over the course of a month. The two available classes are:

  • “Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking Workshop”- starts on April 11th and will run on Tuesdays from 6:30PM-9:00PM 
  • “Editing with Adobe Premiere” – Starts on April 13th and will run on Thursdays from 6:30PM-9:00PM

Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking Workshop

The Minnesota Discovery Center’s Minnesota Media Arts School, in partnership with UMD Duluth and Zeitgeist Film Present:
INTRODUCTION TO DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING WORKSHOP
 
Dates: Tuesday’s (once a week for 8 weeks starting April): 4/11, 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/31
Times: 6:30pm-9:00pm
Capacity: 10 Students
Location: 1005 Discovery Drive Chisholm, Mn 55719
Admission: $250 for full 8-class course
 
 
Workshop Description: Documentary film is a process of curiosity, discovery, and storytelling. In this workshop, we will explore the many different types of documentaries and build the basic technical skills to create successful nonfiction films, including selecting compelling topics based on available resources, pre-production, lighting, sound recording, cinematography, interviewing, finding the story, and editing. Over the course of the workshop, participants will each create their own short documentaries (max 10 min) and will leave the course with the skills and experience to make many more.
 

Instructor bio:

ELIZABETH CHATELAIN | A North Dakota native, Elizabeth Chatelain has directed several documentary and narrative shorts including MY SISTER SARAH, about her sister’s lifelong drug abuse and recovery. It won the International Documentary Association’s Award for Best Student Documentary and was a Student Academy Award Finalist. Her films have screened at festivals across the country and the world, including Interfilm Berlin, Uppsala and SXSW. She has optioned her feature, SUNDOGS, which participated in the Berlinale Script Station and was an Academy Nicholl Fellowship Semi-Finalist and won the Showtime Tony Cox Screenplay Competition. She is a Blacklist/Women in Film Feature Fellow and a Sundance/Women in Film Financing Fellow. She received an MFA in Film Production from University of Texas-Austin and an MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU-Tisch. She currently resides in Hibbing, Minnesota.

Editing with Adobe Premiere

The Minnesota Discovery Center’s Minnesota Media Arts School, in partnership with UMD Duluth and Zeitgeist Film Present:
EDITING WITH ADOBE PREMIERE WORKSHOP
 
Dates: Thursdays (8 weeks) 4/13, 4/20, 4/27, 5/4, 5/11, 5/18, 5/25, 6/1
Times: 6:30pm-9:00pm
Capacity: 8 Students
Location: 1005 Discovery Drive Chisholm – UMD Creative Lab
 
 
Our editing workshop is designed for students who are interested in motion picture, television, and new media post-production. Students learn theory in motion picture, television and media production and editing. They apply that knowledge by producing a variety of projects using Adobe Premiere.

Flavor of the North is back this April!

 

United Way of Northeast Minnesota celebrates the food scene of Northern Minnesota with their annual Flavor of the North competition! This event brings the region’s best dishes under one roof for attendees to try out and vote on the best in each category. With so much great and unique flavors to choose from it is definitely going to be a tight competition, and a dinner that attendees will never forget!

The categories include:

  • Best Appetizer
  • Best Entrees
  • Best Dessert
  • Best Beverage

If you would like to attend it is $50/person or $500 for a table for 8 (It would make for a great night out with coworkers, team members, or just a date night with friends)! Tickets do tend to go fast so grab them up while they are available. The Chisholm Chamber Chilly Open Golf Tournament is back on Saturday March 11th!

 
The annual Chilly Open Golf Tournament is returning this March and you can get registered in advance or on the day of! Can you think of a better way to beat the winter blues than brushing up on your golfing skills with Bloody Marys and chili? There is no cap on the amount of teams who will be allowed to participate so if you have more than 4-5  friends or family who want to get in on the games then split into two teams and have twice as much fun! Visit the event on the Chisholm Area Chamber of Commerce FB page and see who else is competing!

How Many People per team?

  • 4-5 Person teams, must be 18 or older to participate.

What should participants bring?

  • Hockey sticks or golf sticks may be used, racquet balls will be provided 

How much is registration & what is included?

  • Registration is $40 per person and includes dinner at Jim’s, games on the course, door prize entry at the Jim’s after party, as well as the Bloody Mary Bar & Chili Bar that will be on site at the event.

The Hoop Club Pasta Fundraiser is back with Polar Bear Days! Come out and have some pasta for a cause on Wednesday, February 22nd from 4-7 PM at Valentini’s Supper Club in Chisholm! Proceeds from the Hoop Club Pasta Dinner go towards tournament costs, scholarships and other necessities to operate the club.

Sled the City

Sled the City: The Anticipated End of Polar Bear Days Sledding Party

Sled the City will be taking place on Saturday, February 25th from 10AM-4PM at the top of 3rd Street and it’s set to be a fun filled day of sledding & ice skating! There will also be free books & cookies provided by the Chisholm Public Library at the South Side Skating Rink at the bottom of the hill where attendees can enjoy open skate. 

Sled the City is fairly new insofar as our Annual Polar Bear Days events and it is possibly some of the best fun you can have in town this winter, a sledding party right in downtown is definitely something nobody would want to miss!

There’s a few other in town events on the 25th too that you should check out if you’re planning on sledding through Chisholm:

  1. Chisholm Lion’s Club Kids Pajama Party – from 11AM-1PM at Jim’s (Bring the kids in after sledding to warm up, play games, and grab some snacks!)
  2. 12th Annual Luau – 8PM Costume Party at Jim’s with LIVE music by “Merchants of Swill” Limbo contest, costume contest & fishbowl drinks.
  3. Pool Tournament at T&T DOM – Pool tournament at 3PM and LIVE music by “The Hooligans” at 6PM
  4. Snowshoe Adventure Hike at MDC – 1PM-3PM  3-mile guided snowshoe hike to the historic Glen Location with a bonfire, s’mores, and hot cocoa in front of the Thompson Homestead Exhibit.

Chisholm Kiwanis Ice Fishing Contest

The Chisholm Kiwanis Ice Fishing Contest is back again this year during February’s Annual Polar Bear Days Festival. There will be prizes, foods, and plenty of fish to catch this year!

NTXX Annual Polar Bear Days Ride logo

NTXX Polar Bear Ride

Hit the Trails with Food, Fun & Community

The Annual NTXX Polar Bear Ride will start on February 25th and will meet at Jim’s Sports Club at 9AM for breakfast specials before heading out to the trails at 10AM. Ride with NTXX to the Highway 5 Bar on the Chisholm ATV trail for a pit stop before continuing on to the Chisholm Sportsmen’s Club Shelter for FREE lunch of polish & chips and a bonfire!

The ride continues on toward Side Lake (at each rider’s personal pace) and will conclude back in Chisholm where there will be a party at Jim’s Annual Luau with food and entertainment!

Information Worth Noting for the NTXX Polar Bear Day Ride

  • Make sure to dress for the weather as temperatures have varied for this annual ride from -20 degrees to 55 degrees
  • There will be ZERO tolerance for ATVs on the designated snowmobile trails. ATV riders should only use designated ATV trails

Dancing Through the Decades Polar Bear Days Costume Party

The first of Polar Bear Days parties at Jim’s is Dancing Through the Decades which will be on February 18th at 9PM. Dress to the 9’s in your favorite historical era (whether or not that is strictly 20th Century is up to your interpretation & imagination) and party with flap dancers, hippies, 80’s metal rock bands, and mobsters in a time-warp winter wrap-up celebration of the times party that is sure to be an amazing time!

12th Annual Polar Bear Days Luau Party

The 12th Annual Luau Party at Jim’s will take place on February 25th and marks the end of Polar Bear Days. There will be LIVE music from Merchants of Swill starting at 8PM and lots of tropical themed fun to be had throughout the evening, so make sure to break out your grass skirts! 

Precluding the Luau will be the Chisholm Lions Kids Pajama Party with games, bingo & snacks so the kids can have a party this February too!
