Hands on Filmmaking Experience

Are you interested in learning about film production but don’t know where to start? Gain some hands on filmmaking experience by working with the Upper Midwest Film Office on an upcoming project! This will be a three day experience that will allow you to be involved in the filmmaking process and to gain some valuable skills that are an invaluable asset on any film set. Attendees will also be able to make invaluable connections with those who are already in the field, because it is very important to make connections when breaking into a new field!

The three day experience will take place from Friday, September 15th 2023 to Sunday, September 17th 2023.

Tickets for the Hands on Filmmaking Experience are $50/person and may be purchased here!

In This 3 Day Immersive Workshop:

  • Learn the basics of being a Production Assistant – the most common entry-level position on a film crew
  • Work alongside working filmmakers in the making of a short film
  • Gain practical on-set film production experience
  • Learn how the various departments such as Grip & Electric, Sound, Camera, and Art work together and how best to assist in those departments
  • Build invaluable professional connections within the MN film community
  • Be eligible for paid PA positions on incoming film productions

Friday, September 15th

12 pm – 5 pm, presentation from UMFO and Lost Forty Studios, and introductions to instructors. From the concept of our project all the way through our plan of execution, you’ll meet the instructors and learn on-set protocols for each department so that everyone is prepped and ready to make our film.

Saturday, September 16th

Call-time at 10 am, wrap at 5 pm. (specific times subject to change). “There’s nothing like a good ol’ film light in a fogged-up studio.”
Filming in controlled environments, all participants will be hands-on under the guidance of the department leads, switching between departments throughout the day, making it happen.

Sunday, September 17th

Call-time at 10 am, wrap at 5 pm. (specific times subject to change). Post-Production –“That’s a wrap!” Students will be sent a link to the final product to reference!

Cupcakes & beverages will also be available along with optional tours of the facility; who knows, you may run into a kitten that absolutely melts your heart!

United Way Renegade Trail Run logo

United Way Renegade Trail Run

The United Way Renegade Trail Run will be taking place on September 9th at the Redhead MTB Park along their newest trail. Competitive running & non-competitive running, walking, and hiking, along with a new division for the Distance Loop and competitive rucking! All proceeds from the event go towards the United for Veterans program!

Registration fee will cover the cost of the trail run, shirt, chip timing, (1) free beer for runners 21+, or (1) free root beer.

Pricing will begin at $40 for adults and $20 for youth (12 and under) from June 1st-August 25th. Prices will increase to $50 for adults and $30 for youth from August 26th-September 9th!

  • Friday, September 8th – 3PM-6PM Packet Pickup
  • Saturday, September 9th – 7:45AM Registration Opens/Packet Pickup
  • 8:30AM – Presentation of Colors
  • 8:45AM – Competitive 5K Start
  • 9AM – Distance Looping Race Start
  • 9:15AM – Ruck Weighted Division Start
  • 9:30AM/9:45AM/10AM/10:15AM – Non Competitive 5K Starts
  • 10:30AM – Walkers Only 5K Start
  • 12PM – Awards Presentation

About the Distance Looping Run:

Run the Renegade 5K as many times as you are able starting at 9AM; last eligible loops end at 11AM

About the Ruck Weighted Division:

Bring your own 5olbs of weight to ruck across the 5K course! Bring a burlap sack filled with sand or a bag filled with canned food to donate to United Way following the run (be creative!)

Attendees will also be able to purchase food on site from Later Tater & The Ice Cream Truck LLC! Entertainment by K&J Entertainment will also be on site at the Redhead MTB Park.

The Iron Man Market Community Night Out will be hosted by the Chisholm Lions Club & Jim’s Sports Club Bar & Grill on July 27th and August 24th. This is a great opportunity for some professional & community networking on top of a great chance to bring the family out for a fun night out!

LIVE music on the patio, team building activities, complimentary eats, and vendors of food, crafts & art!

The street will be blocked off near Kiwanis Park (Sabin’s Lot) to 2nd Avenue for the duration of the event as well, so plan your driving route accordingly!

Chisholm Citywide Clean-up

The Chisholm Citywide clean-up will be happening from July 11th – July 15th and is going to help everyone in getting rid of a ton of unwanted junk, making our city a little tidier! Everything from tires, refrigerators, and microwave ovens to bricks, wood pallets, and mattresses can go!

Accepted Items:

  • Tires: up to 24.5″ diameter vehicle tires, with or without rims. (LIMIT 4)
  • Appliances: “Preferred Drop Off” At Precious Paws 101 1st Ave SW
    • Refrigerators (remove doors)
    • Freezers (remove doors)
    • Stoves
    • Hot-water Heaters
    • Air conditioners
    • Dehumidifiers
    • Microwave ovens
    • Fluorescent light fixtures (No ballasts/bulbs)
  • Automobile batteries, Lawn mowers, Computer Towers
  • Television & Computer Monitors ($13.50 per item)
  • Mattresses, Box Springs ($12 per item) LIMIT 4 MATTRESSES

**PLEASE MAKE A PAYMENT AT CITY HALL. MUST HAVE RECIEPT OF DROP OFF**

  • Demolition Waste:
    • Bricks, wood, pallets, shingles, rolled roofing, lumber, electric wire, sheetrock, styrofoam, insulation, storm windows
  • Residential Trash: Non-hazardous trash ONLY!

**Hazardous Waste- asbestos laden materials, and other items not listed above will not be accepted. Household Hazardous Waste will be accepted at the Balkan Township Canister Site on July 6th from 10:00 – 1:00**

  • Yard waste will be accepted at the compost site located just west of the cemetery, off Cemetery Road (no bags, please)

 

Preparation:

As stated above, doors must be removed from refrigerators and freezers. Remember Precious Paws before dropping off at the city garage. Other containers are not necessary.

7 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. Monday July 10th, Wednesday July 12th, & Friday July 14th

Alternative Free Drop Off Sites:

The St. Louis County Waste Department accepts tires (LIMIT 4), appliances (LIMIT 2), batteries, used motor oil, scrap metal, used antifreeze, 4-foot fluorescent bulbs (LIMIT 4), and oil filters (LIMIT 4) free of charge at its Transfer Station in Hibbing and its Regional Landfill in Gilbert. Household hazardous wastes are collected by appointment on scheduled dates at no charge.

Corrugated cardboard is accepted at Balkan Township Canister Site free of charge.

2023 Chisholm Chamber Annual Beer Tasting: “Athletic Supporters”

The 12th Annual Chisholm Chamber Annual Beer Tasting Fundraiser for Doc “Moonlight” Graham Days will be themed as Minnesota sports teams this year and dubbed “Athletic Supporter Beer Tastin”. The Athletic Supporter Beer Tasting fundraiser & costume party for this year’s Doc “Moonlight” Graham Days will be taking place on May 5th! The theme for this year will be, as the name implies, sports teams; this includes soccer, football, baseball, hockey, etc.

Pick your favorite sports team and come out dressed like a hardcore fan, their mascot, a cheerleader, or your favorite player! (Please note that this is not a literal ‘athletic supporter’ costume event, but if one was so brave…good on you)

Attendees of the Athletic Supporter Beer Tasting will all have a starting location and then move from location to location trying a variety of beers & cocktails. Participants will have the chance to cast their votes on their favorite drinks throughout the evening and at the final stop the winning drinks will be announced!

There will also be a vote on best costumes from each “home team” (meaning each starting location will have their own winner!) as well as a Live Auction!

The Chisholm Chamber Chilly Open Golf Tournament is back on Saturday March 11th!

 
The annual Chilly Open Golf Tournament is returning this March and you can get registered in advance or on the day of! Can you think of a better way to beat the winter blues than brushing up on your golfing skills with Bloody Marys and chili? There is no cap on the amount of teams who will be allowed to participate so if you have more than 4-5  friends or family who want to get in on the games then split into two teams and have twice as much fun! Visit the event on the Chisholm Area Chamber of Commerce FB page and see who else is competing!

How Many People per team?

  • 4-5 Person teams, must be 18 or older to participate.

What should participants bring?

  • Hockey sticks or golf sticks may be used, racquet balls will be provided 

How much is registration & what is included?

  • Registration is $40 per person and includes dinner at Jim’s, games on the course, door prize entry at the Jim’s after party, as well as the Bloody Mary Bar & Chili Bar that will be on site at the event.

Sled the City

Sled the City: The Anticipated End of Polar Bear Days Sledding Party

Sled the City will be taking place on Saturday, February 25th from 10AM-4PM at the top of 3rd Street and it’s set to be a fun filled day of sledding & ice skating! There will also be free books & cookies provided by the Chisholm Public Library at the South Side Skating Rink at the bottom of the hill where attendees can enjoy open skate. 

Sled the City is fairly new insofar as our Annual Polar Bear Days events and it is possibly some of the best fun you can have in town this winter, a sledding party right in downtown is definitely something nobody would want to miss!

There’s a few other in town events on the 25th too that you should check out if you’re planning on sledding through Chisholm:

  1. Chisholm Lion’s Club Kids Pajama Party – from 11AM-1PM at Jim’s (Bring the kids in after sledding to warm up, play games, and grab some snacks!)
  2. 12th Annual Luau – 8PM Costume Party at Jim’s with LIVE music by “Merchants of Swill” Limbo contest, costume contest & fishbowl drinks.
  3. Pool Tournament at T&T DOM – Pool tournament at 3PM and LIVE music by “The Hooligans” at 6PM
  4. Snowshoe Adventure Hike at MDC – 1PM-3PM  3-mile guided snowshoe hike to the historic Glen Location with a bonfire, s’mores, and hot cocoa in front of the Thompson Homestead Exhibit.

Chisholm Kiwanis Ice Fishing Contest

The Chisholm Kiwanis Ice Fishing Contest is back again this year during February’s Annual Polar Bear Days Festival. There will be prizes, foods, and plenty of fish to catch this year!

Why wait for the summer? Come out on the lake this winter for a community ice fishing competition and win cash prizes for various fish categories! It’s sure to be a fun chance to get the family out and active during these winter months and you might even catch a winner!

Discover Snowshoeing This Winter at Minnesota Discovery Center

There are plenty of opportunities to discover snowshoeing this season with a few events planned at Minnesota Discovery Center (MDC). Reservations must be made in advance as there is limited availability for these guided tours; admission for members is $18 and $20 for non-members. To make your reservation now contact MDC at 218-254-7959!

Upcoming Snowshoe Hikes:

  • Snow Moon Snowshoe Hike – February 2nd starting at 5:30PM (Hike begins at 6PM) For this snowshoe hike, we’ll embark on a 3-mile (round trip) adventure to the historic Glen Location with our trained snowshoe guides. Our guides will point out fun facts and historic artifacts along the way. After exploring, will brew some hot cocoa and roast the perfect s’more over a bonfire in front of the Thompson Homestead. There’s something majestic about snowshoeing in the soft light of the February Snow Moon!
  • Snowshoe Adventure Hike – Saturday, February 25th 12:30PM to 3PM
  • Moonlit Snowshoe Hike – Thursday, March 9th 5:30PM to 8PM

Please note that the Minnesota Discovery Center’s cold weather policy permits that we cancel/postpone hikes if the temperature is below zero, unless guides suggest otherwise. Full refunds will be issued if MDC cancels the event and/or if cancellations are made at least 24 hours in advance of the event. If events are full, ask our admissions staff to add your name to the waiting list for that event and our staff will contact you if spots become available.
