MDC Family Discovery Day: Fossils! Fossils! Fossils!

MDC Family Discovery Day returns on July 20th from 3 PM-7:30 PM with their “Fossils! Fossils! Fossils!” event. Bring out the family and discover the wonderful world of paleontology with fossil demonstrations, displays & activities that kids will LOVE! The Paleo Pals, Cera the Triceratops and App the T-Rex, will also be there for photos with kids and to do whatever it is that dinosaurs like to do.

Plus, learn about MDC Paleontology Programming, the Hill Annex Paleontology Project, volunteer opportunities at our fossil excavation site, and say hello to MDC Paleontologist, John Westgaard.

This event takes places in conjunction with Bands, Brews, & BBQ (family friendly) featuring a full food court menu, hand scooped ice cream, and live music starting at 5pm.

 

Visitor Information: 

Enter through the Summer Admissions Entrance. The event will take place partly inside and outside (weather dependent). If you have questions call 218-254-7959. 

Free and open to the public.

Summer Paleo Camps

June & July Camps!

It’s time to get curious about fossils and the wonderful world of paleontology! Join the Minnesota Discovery Center’s Paleontologist John Westgaard (Co-Founder of the Hill Annex Paleontology Project) this summer for our Paleo Camp Programing this June & July! Fossil Camp is a 4-day hands-on paleontology interactive learning experience in which participants will learn about paleontology, what paleontologist do, and how paleontology relates to Northern Minnesota:

> Field Trip to Dig Site for Fossil Hunt
> Meet the Paleo Pals HAPP & Cera
> Fossil Cleaning
> Fossil Identification
> Fossil Labeling
> Mounting of Fossil Specimens 
> Earn A Youth Paleontologist Certification
> Take Home a Real Cretaceous Period Fossil 
> Recieve Free Admission to the Next Family Discovery Day: FOSSILS! July 20th 3-7:30pm and Display Your Fossil Find to the Public

Additionally, participants will enjoy hands-on activities and games, interaction with real 90-million year old fossils, experince working in our Paleontology Fossil Intake Lab, and embark on a historic adventure (fossil hunt) at our fossil/research dig site (the only one in the entire state of Minnesota)! 

CAMP DATES: Held each day from 9am-4pm, lunch provided. 10 spots available for each program. Funding collected from sign ups supports our year-round Paleontology Programming.

Fossil Camp #1 – June 19th-22nd (Ages 13-18 years old)
Fossil Camp #2 – July 17th-20th (Ages 7-12 years old)

1931 Stuart Lake Bust

The Minnesota Discovery Center will be presenting a guest speaker, Jason Scorich, who will discuss the 1931 Stuart Lake Bust! Discover the fascinating history of prohibition on the early Iron Range on Thursday, June 1st starting at 6:30pm in the MDC Theater. Join Jason as he digs deep into the largest moonshine bust in the Northern Minnesota’s history. Learn, laugh, and love all at once at this fun event! Light refreshments (coffee, water, cookies) will be available. A short Q&A will follow the event and interested patrons are welcome to come prior to 6:30pm and tour our newest temporary museum exhibit – Never Dry: The Rise of Prohibition on the Iron Range 

Prohibition on The Range was an interesting time and history is always fun to explore, and nobody does it better than Minnesota Discovery Center! 

Don’t miss out on this thrilling chapter of Prohibition on The Iron Range at this special presentation, no special passwords needed for entry.

Welcome to the brand new MDC Creative Lab for their Media Arts School! In partnership with Zeitgeist Film Duluth, Minnesota Discovery Center has recently opened up their latest addition to their learning center that includes iMac computers loaded with creative design and editing software, meeting rooms, multi-media studios, film/video equipment for on-site phot/video shoots & projects, digital tools & more!

Their goal is to empower, support, and educate Northland community members ages 16+ as active participants in shaping our culture, and engage diverse communities to rethink the way we view film, art, and local storytelling. We provide access and a platform to work, learn, create, and experience filmmaking and media production in our community.

MDC Screenwriting Workshop

Have a Great idea for a Feature Film? Learn How to Bring it to Life!

The MDC Screenwriting Workshop begins on April 12th and will continue weekly on Wednesdays for an eight-week course that will teach students how to navigate the process of screenwriting! This class is a virtual workshop that students can participate in from home.  

Many have great ideas; only few craft them into screenplays. In this workshop, learn screenwriting fundamentals as you develop your idea from pitch to outline to screenplay. While no previous screenwriting experience is required, you should come to the workshop with ideas for short films.

Instructor Bio:

Matthew Dressel is a Duluth based award-winning screenwriter and recipient of the 2017 IFP Minnesota Screenwriting Residency award. His most recent screenplay, the dark comedy Daniel’s Gotta Die (starring Joel David Moore and Bob Saget), was produced by Darius Films and is slated for a release in 2023. He is the former Programmer for Zinema 2 and former Festival Director of the Duluth Superior Film Festival.

Discover Snowshoeing This Winter at Minnesota Discovery Center

There are plenty of opportunities to discover snowshoeing this season with a few events planned at Minnesota Discovery Center (MDC). Reservations must be made in advance as there is limited availability for these guided tours; admission for members is $18 and $20 for non-members. To make your reservation now contact MDC at 218-254-7959!

Upcoming Snowshoe Hikes:

  • Snow Moon Snowshoe Hike – February 2nd starting at 5:30PM (Hike begins at 6PM) For this snowshoe hike, we’ll embark on a 3-mile (round trip) adventure to the historic Glen Location with our trained snowshoe guides. Our guides will point out fun facts and historic artifacts along the way. After exploring, will brew some hot cocoa and roast the perfect s’more over a bonfire in front of the Thompson Homestead. There’s something majestic about snowshoeing in the soft light of the February Snow Moon!
  • Snowshoe Adventure Hike – Saturday, February 25th 12:30PM to 3PM
  • Moonlit Snowshoe Hike – Thursday, March 9th 5:30PM to 8PM

Please note that the Minnesota Discovery Center’s cold weather policy permits that we cancel/postpone hikes if the temperature is below zero, unless guides suggest otherwise. Full refunds will be issued if MDC cancels the event and/or if cancellations are made at least 24 hours in advance of the event. If events are full, ask our admissions staff to add your name to the waiting list for that event and our staff will contact you if spots become available.
