United Way of Northeast Minnesota is proud to present their Unmasking Mental Health FREE training event for local military, veterans, firefighters, law enforcement, medical staff, first responders, corrections, dispatch, and those providing support & care to them.

The Unmasking Mental Health training event will be taking place on January 16th & 17th at the Iron Trail Motors Event Center in Virginia, MN from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Identical programming is scheduled each day to allow local departments to send multiple shifts of workers to these POST credit-approved trainings!

Unmasking Mental Health Schedule (both days)

  • 8:00-9:00AM : Registration, Breakfast, and Resources
  • 9:00-10:30AM : Welcome & Keynote Speaker – Daniel Sundahl (DanSun) is an internationally recognized artist and writer & is an advanced care paramedic, pre-hospital educator, and retired firefighter. Daniel is passionate about reducing the stigma of PTSD for first responders and uses his art to raise awareness of occupational stress injuries worldwide. Daniel will “unmask” his 14 pieces exhibit during the keynote address.
  • 10:30-10:45AM : Break
  • 10:45-11:45AM : The “S” Word – Marine Combat veteran Dan Hanson (MSW, LGSW) and Suicidologist Brittany Miskowiec (PhD, MSW, LICSW) will discuss why it’s important to talk about suicide in a culture of mental health stigma and how to have the tough conversations.
  • 11:45-12:45PM : Lunch
  • 12:45-1:45PM : Wellness for You – Royce Vang (MA, LAMFT) will discuss how to assess your wellness and areas for growth. She’ll use her knowledge of working with law enforcement and first responders to provide ideas and challenge some common barriers to wellness.
  • 1:45-2:00PM : Break/Transition to Breakout Rooms
  • 2:00-3:00PM : Breakouts – Choose from one of the following
    • Peer Support – Brian Casey is a St. Paul Police Sergeant and Author of “Good Cop Good Cop”, “Ambulance Man”, and the “Peer Support Fundamentals Workbook”. Participants will learn about the basic principles, knowledge, essential skills, and knowledge required to best support their coworkers who are in distress.
    • Family Support – Emma Murphy (MSW, LGSW) will discuss some of the common challenges law enforcement, first responder, and veteran couples and families face. She’ll explain how to start a Family Support Program within organizations and share resources and best practices.
  • 3:00-3:15PM : Break/Transition back to Main Ballroom
  • 3:15-4:30PM : Establishing a Culture of Wellness Within your Organization – Marine Core veteran and retired Police Sergeant, Jeff McGreevy, will share his story and discuss wellness initiatives that he’s seen in his 20 years working in officer wellness. He’ll discuss the victories and challenges along with his experience working as a Public Safety Advocate for First Responder Wellness.
  • 4:30-4:45 : Closing
